How Michigan Solo Attorneys Can Track Which Marketing Channels Actually Work

If you’re a solo attorney in Michigan, you’ve probably tried more than one type of marketing — SEO, Google Ads, maybe even some social media or local sponsorships. But here’s the question I always ask new clients:

👉 Do you actually know which of those marketing efforts are bringing in clients?

If the answer is “not really,” you’re not alone.

Many attorneys tell me they feel like they’re throwing money into a black hole when it comes to marketing. The calls come in, but they have no clear way to connect them back to a specific campaign or ad. And that’s a problem — because what you don’t measure, you can’t improve.

Let’s talk about how to fix that.

1. Start by Defining What “Success” Means for You

Before you start tracking anything, you need to know what you’re measuring. For some attorneys, success means more phone calls. For others, it’s more qualified form submissions or consultations booked.

Here’s what I usually recommend tracking:

  • 📞 Phone Calls (especially from Google Ads or local SEO)

  • 📝 Contact Form Submissions

  • 💬 Live Chat or Messenger Leads

  • 📅 Consultations Scheduled

Once you define what “counts” as a lead, you can start tracking where each one comes from.

2. Use Google Analytics and Google Search Console (the Right Way)

Most attorneys I talk to have Google Analytics installed — but very few are actually using it.

Here’s the simple version:

  • Google Analytics tells you how people find and interact with your site.

  • Google Search Console tells you what they searched for before landing there.

Together, these two tools can show you:

  • Which pages attract the most traffic

  • What keywords are driving visitors

  • How long people stay on your site (and which pages they bounce from)

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a 10-minute review each month can show you what’s gaining traction.

3. Set Up Call Tracking (This Is a Game Changer)

This is one of my favorite tools — and one that most solos don’t realize they can afford.

Call tracking assigns unique phone numbers to different marketing channels (like SEO, Google Ads, or your Google Business Profile). That way, when someone calls, you’ll know exactly where they found you.

For example:

  • A call from your website = SEO lead

  • A call from an ad = Google Ads lead

  • A call from your Google listing = Local SEO lead

When I added call tracking for a family law firm in Metro Detroit, they discovered 40% of their calls were coming directly from their Google Business Profile — not their website. That insight helped them refocus on local SEO instead of spending more on ads.

Use have been using CallRail for years, but there are many different call trackers you can use.

4. Create a Simple Monthly Marketing Dashboard

You don’t need a massive reporting system — just something that gives you clarity.

I build most of my clients a simple dashboard that pulls data from:

  • Google Analytics

  • Search Console

  • Google Ads

  • Call tracking

It shows everything in one place:

  • How many visitors has your site had

  • How many leads came in

  • Which channels delivered them

That’s how you stop guessing and start knowing what’s actually working.

I’ve used Agency Analytics for the last few years, as it’s so simple to set up and create a report. You can even set the reports to automatically get emailed to you every month. Again, there are many different programs out there that you can use.

I always recommend checking your analytics every month and comparing it to the same period from the previous year. This helps you spot patterns or seasonal trends that might need attention.

But here’s the key — don’t overreact to every fluctuation. Too many attorneys ride the wave, celebrating every spike and panicking over every dip. Your data will naturally shift from month to month — calls may go up or down, and keywords will rise and fall. What matters is the bigger picture. Keep your focus on major changes, like a sudden drop in website visitors or a noticeable decline in calls, and respond strategically rather than emotionally.

5. Look Beyond Vanity Metrics

It’s easy to get excited about traffic going up or seeing “more clicks” in Google Ads. But not all clicks lead to clients.

Here’s what really matters:

  • Are you getting qualified leads (not tire kickers)?

  • Is your cost per lead going down over time?

  • Are your calls or consultations increasing steadily?

These are the numbers that build your business. Everything else is just noise.

6. Review, Adjust, and Repeat

Marketing isn’t a one-time project — it’s an ongoing process.

Each month, take a few minutes to:

  • Review which channels performed best

  • See where your leads came from

  • Adjust budgets or focus areas accordingly

Small, consistent improvements compound over time. That’s how solos beat bigger firms — not by spending more, but by staying smarter and more adaptable.

Why This Matters for Michigan Solo Attorneys

When you’re running a small practice, every dollar counts. You can’t afford to keep investing in things that don’t move the needle.

By tracking your results and knowing exactly where your clients come from, you can double down on what works — and cut what doesn’t.

That’s what I help my clients do every day. Whether it’s improving Google Ads performance, boosting SEO, or tightening reporting, the goal is always the same: make your marketing simple, measurable, and effective.

“Without the help of Bill, I can safely say that my firm wouldn’t be where it is today. I’m thrilled that my phones are starting to ring with possible new cases and my rankings are up across Google.
